My name is Trance. I’m the Kanye of Magic a Kenyan based magician. I do card tricks at events.

HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOUR CRAFT?

I saw a friend Kay the magician , do a small trick which amazed me. I decided to research more on the craft, practised enough and got to where I am.

DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR?

@kaythemagician on Instagram is who introduced me to the game & I look up to Michael Vincent, an award winning magician.

DESCRIBE WHAT YOU DO & YOUR INSPIRATIONS?

I do card tricks & illusions. What drives me is the amount of beauty I see in astonishment whenever I perform magic for people. It’s like for a moment they are in Wonderland and all their problems disappear, all that’s left is magic.

WHAT’S THE BASIC REACTION GOTTEN WHEN PERFORMING & ANY MEMORABLE ONE?

Well I get mixed reactions. Some get shocked, others get surprised but the way I present my work is very enjoyable. The best moment so far has to be just a few days ago, someone told me “this is the most amazing thing I have seen the whole year” after a trick.

HOW DO YOU FEEL YOUR SOCIETY AFFECTS YOUR INDUSTRY?

The Kenyan society has always viewed magic so differently as it is viewed in the West, but as I’ve said the way I present my work also has to be enjoyable and magical not scary as I have to also fit in with african norms.

IS THERE A GOOD SUPPORT ATMOSPHERE IN YOUR FIELD?

Magic is an upcoming genre of entertainment, more so the magic that I do. I feel like there is a good support well as far as I can see as people seem to enjoy my work.

MOST CLICHE THING YOU’VE COME ACROSS IN YOUR FIELD?

Some people view my work as witchcraft and don’t appreciate it. It’s art & sometimes you just have to look at art and appreciate it, not question what was going through the artist’s mind, just appreciate it.
