Grace Oduokene

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF

I’m a professional aerial performer and dancer. I love drawing, cartoons, music and food (sea food specifically)

HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOUR CRAFT?

I started off as a dancer, contortionist and a yogi. Later in the process of looking for a unique additional act, I searched online and saw something in circles spinning. I loved what I saw. I became super interested and began learning it.

WHAT SKILLS ARE REQUIRED TO DO WHAT YOU DO?

It takes strength and mobility but also a level of confidence in your ability to engage and connect with an audience while performing difficult feats. Flexibility, strength and being graceful are very important traits needed for this act.

HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR AN ACT?

I do some personal practice on the kind of act i want to perform, then add up anything physical; like cardio & stretches.

WHAT ARE YOUR CHALLENGES AS A CREATIVE?

Having a performance on a small stage; where I can’t express myself explicitly. Distraction is most likely the biggest obstacle.

WHAT’S A MEMORABLE MOMENT IN YOUR CAREER?

Standing ovations and applause from two and a half thousand people is quite an amazing feeling! It’s something really special, and it’s quite humbling.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF WHAT YOU DO AND HOW DO YOU IMPLEMENT SAFETY?

Some risks are sudden falls, rig damage, and getting stuck during performance. For safety: I ensure the equipment I use is in the right position and properly tightened. Before getting on stage, I cross-check my riggings to ensure a free movement of the lines.

HOW DO YOU FEEL YOUR SOCIETY AFFECTS YOUR CRAFT?

It actually encourages my craft; the response and acceptability from the people, gives the drive and tenacity for growth and expansion. And I don’t pay attention to negativity; I don’t let it get at me.

MOST REWARDING PART OF WHAT YOU DO?

The opportunity to bring aerial act at its best to my society & country at large.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE FUTURE IN YOUR CRAFT?

To make this craft a full time career; own a standard aerial dance studio where I can teach and train young people in the act.
