TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF
I’m DJ Boboss, known for crafting my own deejaying decks from recycled materials. My real name is Paul Mwangi, from Kirinyaga County, Kenya. I was born in Kerugoya, attended Ndaba Primary School, later transferred to Kagio Primary due to family issues, and eventually completed my education back at Ndaba with good marks.
HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOUR CRAFT
It all started during my high school days. I would sneak out on weekends to attend parties, and one day in Thimangiri, Meru County, I saw a live DJ performance with some famous Kenyan artists. That moment sparked my interest in deejaying.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START CREATING YOUR OWN DJ DECKS
At that party, I was captivated by the DJ’s equipment. Since I already knew how to repair electronics, I decided to create my own. Using cardboard and old radios I had at home, I built my first deck. Today, I also make affordable deejaying equipment for others.
HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHICH OBJECTS TO INCORPORATE INTO YOUR SETUP
I focus on materials readily available and enjoy recycling. By reusing objects that would otherwise be discarded, I blend the past with the present. For me, it’s a way of preserving history while evolving with technology.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU AS A DJ
Music inspires me endlessly. I love blending different genres, remixing tracks, and even experimenting with my own acapella. I’m passionate about creating unique sounds, and I often use DJ apps like CROSS DJ instead of standard music players.
WHAT ARE YOUR CHALLENGES AS A CREATIVE
Criticism is a big one. Some people think I’m crazy, and others even call me a witch! Another challenge is the weight of my equipment—it’s heavy to carry around.
WHAT WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE THING AS A DJ
Being invited by Santuri East Africa for a Halloween show was unforgettable. I performed for a crowd filled with wealthy people and celebrities, some of whom do international shows. They even invited me for a Boiler Room set—it was such an incredible experience!
HOW DO YOU FEEL YOUR SOCIETY AFFECTS YOUR INDUSTRY
My society is a huge source of motivation. Seeing other hardworking creatives pushes me not to give up. Everyone has their role to play, and that collective effort inspires me to keep going.
IS THERE A GOOD SUPPORT ATMOSPHERE BETWEEN CREATIVES IN YOUR SPACE
Absolutely! I receive so much support, both online and in person. My fans appreciate my art, and there’s little hate. My mum is my biggest cheerleader—her encouragement keeps me going.
WHAT WOULD YOU DESCRIBE AS THE FUTURE OF YOUR PATH
The future is bright! I dream of owning a studio, a manufacturing company, and deejaying classes. I want to host live sessions and massive shows—bigger than Boiler Room, haha. Playing for a crowd of millions has always been my ultimate dream.
