TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF
I’m Obaloluwa Oluwatobiloba Akinyele-Peter, a creative in short. I’m an animator, music producer and DJ. Also known as the Agbada DJ.
HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOUR CRAFT
My early interest in animation led to experimentation with drawing and basic storytelling with my older brother. I developed my drawing style observing a friend’s animation process. My passion for music creation also grew from my love for consuming media, and I started producing music using FL Studio during sophomore year in 2017.
WHAT’S BEHIND YOUR AGBADA OUTFIT AS A DJ
I wanted something that would retain attention when I posted videos. The agbada sparked conversations but not as much attention as I needed. I decided to start saying one of my most said phrases at the beginning of my videos which is “alright chill” and that did the trick.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR CREATIVE ENERGY
The balance isn’t so difficult, I animate when there’s a client’s work to be done. I don’t spend as much time animating as I do making music.
MEMORABLE MOMENT AS A CREATIVE
1, 2, shake shake going viral, Major League DJz & Major Lazer playing my remix of (Lean On) at their show in Italy, Don jazzy following me on Instagram…
CHALLENGES ON YOUR CREATIVE PATHS
Fatigue! Playing shows all through the weekend and still having to go out during the week doesn’t really leave a lot of room for creative work but we still make it work.
HOW DOES YOUR SOCIETY AFFECTS YOUR INDUSTRY
Nigeria used to think of DJs as an afterthought planning events without a budget for the DJs. But that has changed and same goes for producers.Lol
IS THERE A GOOD SUPPORT ATMOSPHERE BETWEEN DJS
I think so. There’s a sense of community amongst DJs, especially EDM DJs which I’m most familiar with. A win for one of us is a win for all of us.
MOST REWARDING PART OF WHAT YOU DO
I can be a one man army. I can do most things from production to design to performing my music. If I could sing really well, I’d be unstoppable
AN ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE OTHER CREATIVES ABOUT TO BEGIN
Run am! Ma fo!
